Much ado about PINs and Library Cards

PINs

Minerva Libraries (that’s us) will soon begin using 4-digit PINs to help protect your online library account and prepare for future system software updates. This change affects all patrons who place holds and manage their accounts online at minerva.maine.edu.

What Is Changing? How you log in to your online library account will require a 4 digit PIN instead of your name. You will use a 4-digit PIN along with your library card number to log in to your account when you want to place holds, manage your checkouts, etc. You will set this pin yourself, online, starting March 17. If you do not have an email address, but use the online catalog to place holds, library staff can help you set your pin either in person or over the phone.

When Does This Start? March 17, 2026

Why Is This Happening? Because…the internet! PINs are required for upcoming system upgrades to our online catalog. PINs are commonly used in libraries nationwide and add security to your personal information.

LIBRARY CARDS

A library card instantly elevates the power of every wallet! 💪 Please bring your library card to the library!

In tandem with the PIN update, BHML will begin requiring library cards to checkout materials. This has technically always been the *only* requirement to check materials out; we’re just recommitting our vows to the library card to help us help you efficiently and accurately.

If you’ve lost your card, we can replace it for you.

We will continue to accept short card/old card numbers for as long as the consortium allows. No changes there.

We appreciate your help enacting these updates. Please let us know if you have any questions, or need a replacement library card.
